Pools are much more than places to cool off — they are a symbol of summer, for family and community gatherings. Great Neck’s pool culture takes many forms, each with its own character and traditions. A unique lifestyle and tradition that has defined Great Neck for generations on end.

A fun fact about Great Neck? It has one of the highest concentrations of residential swimming pools on Long Island. The combination of large residential properties, affluent neighborhoods, and the peninsula’s Gold Coast heritage has made backyard pools – along with cabanas, hot tubs and accoutrements – a defining feature of the local landscape, since our postwar building boom of the 1950s and 1960s.

We have roughly 7,000 single-family homes spread across the nine incorporated villages of Great Neck, Great Neck Plaza, Great Neck Estates, Kensington, Kings Point, Lake Success, Russell Gardens, Saddle Rock and Thomaston. In addition, parts of the peninsula are unincorporated hamlets governed directly by the Town of North Hempstead, including Harbor Hills, University Gardens, and certain portions of Great Neck and Manhasset Hills.

There isn’t a single official count of swimming pools on the Great Neck peninsula, but a reasonable guestimate is possible. That is, approximately 1,000 to 1,400 private residential pools, approximately seven village/community pools, and 10–15 private club pools located in luxury- style apartments and condominiums.
