PHASE 5 & 6 | FOUNDATION TRAINING
This is a movement called the Lateral Hinge and it is from Phase 5 of . In phase 5 we begin to work on full body rotational patterns that emphasize the hip, doing the majority of the work, in the previous phases we have done a ton of hip centered work, but here we start to add more layers to it and more challenge. So many of us have limits in the range of motion of the pelvis and hip joints, and it puts pressures into the spine instead of dispersing the load evenly throughout the whole body, so we develop spinal issues, joint compression pain, and nerve ouchiness that are all really hip issues. This phase gets the rotational ability of the hips, and really all the different movements the hips can do, to be the best they can possibly be. This phase addresses asymmetries of the body and cross patterns really well. As well as giving us incredible power and force output in our cross patterns like swinging a gulf club or tennis racket, paddling, throwing... anything that requires rotation that we can get the full body to participate in it.

I have a pattern in my body that can cause pain in my right hip, it’s the kind of pain where I start thinking I need hip surgery and can get freaked out by it. (anxiety-googling) It is actually from me getting twisted up. Sometimes you are not injured, you are just twisted! Phase 5 is all about winding and unwinding and it totally cures my hip thing! Which is astonishing because when it gets going it feels like, “uh oh, this is the end...” lol!!

Phase 6 builds on this stuff and is incredibly challenging it takes all these patterns and combines them with other work that we have done and we get into these compound movement patterns with layers of the work together and phew!

WOODPECKER ROTATION:
This pose is extraordinarily difficult and when I teach it, people often feel anger come up. It lengthens the glutes, trains the Iliotibial Band in a long position which helps it become supple, and it works the whole outside of the shin down to the foot. It can sometimes instantly cure sciatica, but usually it takes some practice to have changes happen. It makes space for the sciatic nerve and space for the sacroiliac joint, returns a wonderful amount of rotation to the hip joint and can really help free up the knees from glutes that had been clenching and a too tight and hard IT band. This movement will change the way you walk and run to a pattern that makes your back and hips and knees feel good and alive. Because this is you are also strengthening the posterior chain, our backs “core” and shock / strut / antigravity muscles. And it is fully integrated facially from head to toe making the opening in the hips actually a full body movement that creates changes through the torso, shoulders and neck. AND you are breathing in a way that opens the whole system up simultaneously. If I look at it from a Chinese Medicine lens, I see it working the Gall Bladder channel which is part of the wood element and the emotion of the wood element is anger, the anger of “this box is too small! Break it!! I’m trying to f****ing grow here!!” When new students come to class I make sure to tell them how much emotion will come up through working with our posture. There is a reason we hold ourselves the way that we do. When doing foundation training we really disrupt all of that and I find it to be like… “damn!! And freedom!!”

UPCOMING SPRING FOUNDATION TRAINING COURSES!
It has been seven years since this photo was taken, and I am still teaching Foundation Training. I think I teach Foundation Training partly from my own grief that comes from the traumas I have had within the medical system, from being hurt and vulnerable and being shuttled into a system that moves fast, doesn’t listen, doesn’t educate, doesn’t treat you with care, just finishes a job and then shoots you out the other end and, likely, hurts you more in the process. In my classes, I educate a lot about the anatomy and the why & the how of what we are doing, not just me giving instructions and then you following along as if it’s a “Simon Says” routine. I try to empower each and every student with knowledge about themselves and how the body works so that they know what they’re feeling and what they’re looking for and how to create that in their bodies and why they would want to create that. I think I secretly have a goal that my students get enough education about their bodies that they can talk with their doctor or physical therapist and feel like they know what they are talking about and feel empowered to work as a team and even feel equal enough to not just blindly take orders, but to know what is right for them and what isn’t and be able to make empowered decisions in those situations. I want everyone to be an expert on their own body and to have the skills that they need in order to help themselves feel better and to take care of themselves, no matter what challenges life gives them.
