As the anniversary of Helene approaches I can’t help but remember my hurricane couple Ben & Becky. Two pilots from Florida, Set to have their tented reception on the shore of Lake Lure the day after the hurricane hit WNC hard. They spent over a year planning and it was a destination for them and their family. They arrived at the Lake on Wednesday and were completely stranded with many of their guests by Friday, the last text I received from Ben before they lost signal, was “do not come here, there is no way in or out, and turn anyone around who tries to come.”

I was heartbroken for them and their guests and so worried about them all weekend because I knew they were stranded, and I saw pictures of the lake and their tent site and how bad it was. It felt so helpless.

But with their bridal party by their side and their officiant present they were able to still tie the knot at their Airbnb which had a generator and a ton of food they brought in in the days leading up. One friend even brought his DJ equipment and the house they rented happened to be on stilts and incurred no flood damage despite being very close to the lake.

As soon as they were able to drive out again that Monday they called me and as they were headed back to Florida, they stopped in Greenville just to hug me and bless me. They were in such shock from all that happened but still somehow grateful. Their very expensive wedding they planned for over a year was ruined, but they were still happy, they were together and they knew what was important.

When I think of Ben & Becky I still tear up, and I have never told their story on here because I feel like it’s not really mine to tell, and I didn’t want to bring up something hurtful to them, but a year out, I can honestly say I’ve never met a couple more truly in love then those two.

Happy (almost) anniversary ! I wanted to be the first to wish it to you. You and Ben deserve the world. Love y’all!
