The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease estimates that nearly 31 million Americans suffer from chronic sinus infections (sinusitis). Chronic sinusitis is defined by the Mayo Clinic as a sinus infection that lasts more than eight weeks or is reoccurring during a long period of time. Chronic sinusitis is common for people who suffer from severe allergies or have a physical complication such as nasal polyps or a deviated septum. These conditions make it difficult for mucus to drain properly, irritating the sinus cavity which leads to continual infections. Chronic sinus infections can have an impact on a person's general health.
EXCESSIVE INFECTIONS
A person suffering from chronic sinusitis has a greater chance of developing more infections in the upper-respiratory region. According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, a person with a chronic sinus infection is more susceptible to ear, throat and chest infections. This is due to the excessive amount of mucus being produced and restricted from draining properly through the nasal passages.

LIFE-ALTERING INFECTIONS
If the sinus infection is not under close watch or properly treated, it can lead to severe infectious complications. Meningitis is a common concern for people suffering from chronic sinusitis, according to the Mayo Clinic. Meningitis is the infection of the lining around the brain and it can cause swelling and then pressure on the brain itself and spinal chord. An eye-socket infection is another concern, as it can lead to eyesight issues or blindness if not treated promptly.
TIREDNESS
A person suffering from chronic sinusitis is prone to tiredness and fatigue. The inflamed sinus cavity presses on the back of the eyeballs, leading to the feeling of being tired. Also, the body's immune system is overworking itself, attempting to ward off the constant infection, which will require the body to need more sleep.
POSTNASAL DRIP
Postnasal drip is a common concern among people suffering from chronic sinus infections, according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology. Postnasal drip is the constant dripping of mucus down the back of the throat. Postnasal drip can cause chronic sore throat, stomach sourness, chest congestion, a chronic cough, bad breath and an increase chance of developing thrush (throat infection).
LOSS OF SMELL AND TASTE
Chronic sinusitis can cause a decrease in smell and taste. Breathing air through your nose plays an important role in tasting and smelling. When the sinus cavity is congested and inflamed, air is not able to flow freely, leading to a lack of normal smell and taste.
