When you become aware that you have had a damaging impact on a person, or that your group of people has had an oppressive impact on another people group, what does it cost you to believe them, to center their experience, and for a time prioritize it?
What is difficult about considering that these things they says about you may be true?
What makes it even more difficult to consider these experiences may be a result of your actions?
To the individual or group confused by defensiveness, rage, “over-reaction,” and things like protests, consider that after the devastation of betrayal, deceit, gaslighting, abuse, and dehumanizing they have experienced, that rage is the only way they feel safe to show up with you?
Consider that beneath the anger is grief. Deep sadness. Profound loss. Even fear and terror.
Consider that the abrasiveness of their words and gestures are their reaction to your impact on them.
We need to listen to their words, and make space for their feelings, and prioritize their experience!
