Neat little black bowl dates from around 1930. The design motif is the "Avanyu". The pueblo people of Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico, believe that this great horned serpent lives in the waters and tributaries of the Rio Grande river. Its image appears on walls and caves. The heavy black high relief pottery is unique to the Santa Clara.
