July is fibroid awareness month and COGC wants to bring this important condition to the light!

Fibroids or uterine leiomyomas are usually non-cancerous growths from the uterus that can significant symptoms such as heavy bleeding, pressure, pain, or fertility issues. They can affect up to 80% of the population and some people may have fibroids without displaying any symptoms. They are diagnosed through a pelvic exam and/or pelvic imaging. There are several treatments that exist to manage fibroids and their symptoms including medications (non-hormonal and hormonal) and surgery. We at COGC have clinicians who are skilled in managing fibroids including surgical management. One of the new uterus sparing techniques we offer is the the Acessa procedure, also known as laparoscopic uterine fibroid radiofrequency thermal ablation. It is a minimally invasive outpatient treatment that destroys living fibroid tissue using a thin needle through three small abdominal incisions. The energy used during the procedure heats the fibroid tissue causing it to soften and shrink over time allowing symptoms such as heaving bleeding, pressure, or pain to improve with no suturing of the uterine tissue. Additionally, the body’s natural process gradually reabsorbs the fibroid into surrounding tissue in the uterus. It is important to know that depending on the size and location of fibroids, Acessa may not be an appropriate option for everyone. Additionally, all treatment options for fibroids have benefits, warnings, precautions, and risks and this should be discussed with someone who performs theses procedures such as the individuals in our practice.
