I enjoyed speaking with the 125 high school students attending Hampton University’s Young Diplomats Summer Program this week. These outstanding young leaders traveled from across the country—including as far away as California—to take part in this unique experience.

I was honored to serve as one of the community leaders on the program and share my journey in public service, what inspired me to serve, and the importance of civic engagement. The students asked thoughtful questions about careers in public service, leadership, and a wide range of other topics.

Thank you to Hampton University for investing in the next generation of leaders and for bringing together such an impressive group of young people from across the nation.

Beneath the branches of the Emancipation Oak, history is not a distant memory - it is a living presence, a daily reminder.

This sacred witness has stood through generations, capturing the breath of our ancestors, offering reflection, solace, and hope to all who have gathered beneath its shade. Its roots remind us that what is deeply planted can endure, even through the fiercest storms.

As we honor Juneteenth, we celebrate freedom while remembering the courage, resilience, and sacrifice that made it possible. Before freedom reached Galveston, the first Southern reading of the Emancipation Proclamation took place beneath this very tree.

The Emancipation Oak still stands, teaches, bears witness. And its story reminds us that freedom is both a legacy and a responsibility 💙⚓️
