Berkeley County First Steps

CLASSROOM GARDEN ☼ Last month we celebrated the halfway mark of our year-long pilot program, First Steps Into the Garden!

During this new gardening program for 3- to 4-year-old classrooms, we’re exploring the South Carolina Early Learning Standards through the lens of a classroom garden.

Each month, three participating centers have received simple weekly lesson plans, materials lists, vocabulary & Mighty Minutes cards, a bulletin board for tracking learning progress, and a book for their classrooms… all leading up to creating an outdoor garden to provide food and new ways to learn.

SUMMER FUN ☼ This summer, we’re hosting programming in the 3K classrooms at our partner centers. Last week, Stephanie McFadden visited Betty's Day Care in St. Stephen, SC to lead the children in outdoor sensory exploration and natural arts & crafts. Thanks, Stephanie!

JOIN US ☼ We’re out & about! Families with young children are invited to join our team at the 3rd Annual Health & Wellness Expo from 10 AM to 1 PM today.

We’ll be on hand at 2429 Midland Park Road, Building 200 in North Charleston. Besides fresh produce, free children’s health resources, and medical screenings for kids, MUSC Hollings Cancer Center will be on site to provide vaccines to VFC-eligible children.
