The world makes sense when I’m on a bicycle and it’s the bicycle that saved my life. Whether it’s on a spin bike teaching a class at RVC or on a mountain bike for a race, I pedal for my life.

I’ve always been an avid cyclist. As a child, my family biked for fun, fitness and travel. In college, I learned to mountain bike with friends and graduated to participate in charity road rides in my 20s. This would seem like the obvious background of a 40-something Spin Instructor who fills her free time racing but the path is never as linear as it seems. In my 30s, I took the longest, most circuitous route through alcoholism, bankruptcy and debilitating injury to get to where I am now.

I spent several years in the grips of addiction where I eventually lost everything but a bicycle and my life. The promise of what that bike could provide was the only thing that kept it in my possession as I fought to free myself from alcohol, strengthen a degenerating spine and find relief from crushing debt but I wasn't sure I would make it to ride a bike again.

In 2016, I found recovery in the Upper Valley and could breathe for what felt like the first time. The question was no longer IF I would live but HOW? And HOW DO YOU start living AGAIN the middle of your life when you've got nothing but a bike? You go for a ride. You keep going for rides. You pedal like your life depends on it. In those rides, I found the freedom that I fought for. The rides got longer and lead to jobs, to health, to confidence and a life I’m worthy of. When I put my feet on the pedals, I remember where I came from and I know where I can go and GO, I do. At an age considered "over the hill" I started going over hills, lots of them, as fast as I could and found that I was pretty good at it.

I'll be 43 at the end of the biggest race of my life; a 24-hour mountain bike race at the base of Mount Washington...solo. The spin instructor in me knew that I would need help and I've asked RVC to sponsor me to bike my best life ever.

I invite you to follow along as I work with RVC Personal Trainer Alex Figueroa to become race ready and prove that life starts when you want to ride it. 05/20/2023

The reps you least thought could be done, once completed are the reps that affect the greatest change. Get uncomfortable.
