Tech Tips tuesday -
Safety wire is part of the requirements for getting your bike race ready. There are 2 main purposes:
1 - it ensures that your bolt doesn't vibrate itself loose
2 - it acts as a quick visual check that the bolt has been torqued down appropriately
Safety wire should be done in such a way that the bolt is unable to rotate while the safety wire is attached - that means the safety wire should be tight to the tie down point. The most difficult/annoying part is often drilling the bolt - a drill press can make it a lot easier, or you can often go online and find pre-drilled bolts for sale.
Tech only requires the oil drain bolt(s) and fill cap(s) to be safety wired, but it can be wise to safety wire any bolts that are part of regular maintenance and secure fluids (oil filters, brake calipers, etc).

Tech Tips tuesday -
Catch cans are necessary to prevent oil, coolant, or any other fluid from ending up on the track in the event of a crash. The easiest way to make a catch can is to just cut some PVC pipe to length, press a cap on both ends, and the drill some holes. Your catch can should be large enough to hold a decent bit of liquid, and it should have a vent hole drilled as well. It's not a perfect solution, but it definitely helps!
Fuel injected bikes should only need a catch can/overflow container for coolant.
