Y'all please don't drag me.
I was torn about celebrating July 4th with everything happening in the U.S., especially after the passing of Trump’s so-called “Big Beautiful Bill.” There’s not much to celebrate, honestly. But I also felt this holiday could still serve as a day of civic engagement, a moment to reflect on the ongoing fight for freedom.
Freedom is such a fragile thing, it can be destroyed in the blink of an eye and takes decades to rebuild. I am cherishing what’s left of it.
It's funny because I’ve never been one to do much on the 4th, mainly because I have always been aware of its hypocrisy. But lately, I’ve found myself making a conscious effort to reclaim Black spaces, neighborhoods, and community if only as an act of resistance.
