PTSD Awareness Month may be ending, but cumulative trauma doesn't follow a calendar.
People often ask me about the shooting on that cold December night. The truth is, I trained for that night, and I believe I did exactly what I had been trained to do.
What I never trained for was everything that came afterward... or how cumulative trauma can quietly change who you are.
Still trying to fully mourn the loss of my dad. Losing another officer. Losing what would have been our first child. Trying to navigate it all during COVID while somehow continuing to be a husband, a police officer, and simply... myself.
Looking back, it wasn't one event that changed me. It was the cumulative weight of everything, all at once.
That's one of the reasons I believe resilience deserves as much attention as any other skill we train for. We prepare first responders to respond to the emergency. We should also prepare them for what happens after it. Resiliency should be part of every first responder's training portfolio—not because it prevents trauma, but because it helps prepare us for life's inevitable challenges, both on and off duty.
I'm open about my journey because I hope it gives someone else permission to open up about theirs. When something changes inside of you, you know it. Don't ignore it.
If sharing my story gives just one first responder permission to talk about theirs, then it's worth it.
🎥 I share more of that journey in this interview with my good friends at The Power of Patriots. Check the comments for link.

Hi everyone,
One thing I've learned since founding The Partner Foundation is that the most meaningful work we do rarely makes it to social media.
Not because we don't want to share it, but because many of those interactions are personal, confidential, and deserve to remain that way.
Recently, I found myself meeting with a first responder I'd never met before. We talked about his critical incident, life, trauma, recovery, and some of the difficult things he's still carrying as a result.
In return, I shared my own story. We connected in a way that very few people can truly understand.
At one point, our conversation led to us looking up the last photo we each had of ourselves in uniform before our incidents.
I was surprised to find mine was the photo attached below.
Forty pounds lighter. A huge smile on my face. Working a community event at a local park.
Looking at that photo reminded me why I chose this profession in the first place. The community. The kids. The laughter. The smiles.
It also reminded me that critical incidents don't just affect us in the moment. They can slowly change how we see ourselves, how we carry stress, and how we experience life.
Sometimes recovery is simply helping someone find their way back to the person they were before the trauma.
To me, that's exactly what The Partner Foundation is about.
It’s connecting someone to a resource so they can find that smile again.
It's introducing one first responder to another who understands what they're going through.
It's sharing a cup of coffee and reminding someone they're not alone.
The truth is, much of what we do at the foundation happens quietly. It happens through relationships, phone calls, introductions, conversations, and connections built over time.
Because of that, there are often long stretches where you may not see much activity on our social media pages. That doesn't mean nothing is happening. It simply means the work is taking place where it matters most—person to person.
🎂 One of the most consistent ways people support that mission is through Facebook Birthday Fundraisers. These fundraisers have been a tremendous blessing to our Foundation and have become one of our most reliable sources of support from the community.
If you have a birthday coming up, I'd be honored if you would consider choosing The Partner Foundation as your fundraiser.
Your support helps us continue building those connections, helping first responders find trusted resources, and making sure that when someone reaches out, there's someone on the other end willing to listen.
Thank you for believing in what we're building.

National Police Week is a time to honor the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication of the men and women who serve and protect our communities every day. We remember the fallen, support the families who stand beside them, and thank those who continue to wear the badge with strength and integrity.

The profession asks a lot from first responders.
Long shifts.
Critical incidents.
Missed time with family.
Constant stress.
The pressure to carry things most people will never fully understand.
And over time, that weight adds up.
At The Partner Foundation, we believe healing is not just about surviving the hard moments… it’s about learning how to balance the stress of this profession before it consumes you.
That’s why we focus on connection through adventure therapy, respite opportunities, and peer support.
Because sometimes healing looks less like “treatment” and more like reconnecting with yourself again.
Sometimes it’s being out on the water with people who understand.
Sometimes it’s sitting around a fire after years of feeling isolated.
Sometimes it’s finally realizing you are not the only one carrying invisible weight.
We believe positive stress, challenge, movement, purpose, and connection can play a powerful role in helping first responders decompress from the constant demands of the job.
Not because they are weak.
But because they are human.
Too many first responders spend years stuck in survival mode without ever truly slowing down long enough to reset mentally, emotionally, and physically.
That’s why creating healthy outlets matters.
That’s why community matters.
That’s why connection matters.
You can wear the badge proudly while still taking care of the person underneath it.
And sometimes the first step toward healing is simply being around people who understand the weight you carry without needing an explanation.
That is why The Partner Foundation exists.
