Diocese of Heiban Ordination Service - "Joy begins with you Jesus and suffering becomes like joy" 07/10/2026

In the Nuba Mountains, the church is expanding every day in spite of difficult conditions. In February, the Diocese of Heiban, led by Bishop Elsir Hassan Kuku Elsir Kuku, confirmed multiple youth and ordained new priests for a church plant in the Koalib region, a few hours north of Heiban.

As we transitioned to celebrating communion together, the choir, made up of a group of young ladies who traveled with us from the cathedral in Heiban, led us in worship with this rich chorus "Joy begins with you Jesus and suffering becomes like joy"

We received such an amazing welcome when we visited Sudanese refugees in South Sudan back in February! From a marching band greeting us, to a wonderful lunch, and then finishing with choir and dance displays highlighting different church choirs as well as various tribal dance groups, we were given an incredible taste of the beauty of Sudanese culture, while groups worshipped the Lord in song and dance. We even had a group of Muslim Fulani who are normally uninterested in joining these kind of events (they are the men in long blue gowns dancing), who asked to join the church event in spite of religious and cultural differences which have kept them away in the past. All in all it was a foretaste of heaven when all tribes and nations will bring their diverse languages and cultures to worship before the Lord’s throne!

Getting back from a helpful time at the ACNA provincial council meeting in Tulsa, OK where we represented SCP with an exhibit table, co-led a workshop with Kristen from Anglican Relief and Development Fund on advancing global partnerships, and were able to meet new people from throughout the Anglican world in North America. Also, as an added bonus we were able to spend some good time connecting with friends from major partners like New Wineskins Missions Network and SAMS. The big highlight was when they announced our new status as affiliate ministry partners with the ACNA! We were on the list of key ministries who made it through the first round of their new affiliate process and feel deeply honored to be included.

Check out our June Newsletter for updates on conflict in the Nuba Mountains and current peace efforts led by Bishop Andudu Adam Elnail and other important leaders in the Nuba Mountains.

We have been supporting Andudu's peace workshops since 2022 and this current fighting between tribes highlights how important this ministry is.

Our mission to is "equip the Sudanese church in the formation of Christ-centered leaders", and we do this in multiple ways, but one of them is the work that Andudu and other church leaders are doing to cultivate awareness, imagination, and constructive pathways for peace amongst current and future leaders, including religious, political, tribal, and other community leaders in the region, both Christian and non-Christian alike.

Recently, Andudu started to share lessons learned from these workshops in different settings, including Grace Secondary School and at Korkel Theological Institute. To be a church leader in the Nuba Mountains includes more than just regular education or basic seminary foundations. The ongoing situation in this context requires leaders to be able to cultivate peace in a setting which has long been impacted by war.

Our prayer is that the peace of Christ which passes all understanding will equip Christian leaders in the Nuba Mountains for their incredibly important and challenging work and that these leaders and their churches would be able to share this peace with a society who so desperately needs it.

Bishop Andudu and the Anglican church in the Sudan Nuba Mountain region is asking the diocese of Christ Our Hope to join in prayer and fasting in relation to a recent outbreak of violence in the Nuba Mountains. The violence has caused major disruption and significant damage to various areas in both the Diocese of Kadugli and Heiban in the Nuba region. Local tribal conflict which escalated has also been exacerbated by recent drone strikes on humanitarian infrastructure. Bishop Andudu has been elected by regional religious and community leaders to lead a peace committee, which is guiding both prayer and relief efforts for all of those affected. Please join us in lifting up the situation and Bishop Andudu‘s efforts. He has specifically called to join other Sudanese and Anglicans around the world to pray and fast on Wednesday, May 27th from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Back in February, I got to witness an ordination and confirmation service in a region of the Nuba Mountains called Koalib. New churches are being planted there and so one of those churches hosted a service celebrating 2 new priests, 2 new lay readers (lay pastors), 5 new Mother's Union members, and some youth were confirmed. Christians make up about 10% of the Nuba Mountains, but the church is growing rapidly with many conversions and new churches being planted in unreached areas.

One thing that stood out to me at the service was the culture of celebration. This singing and dancing occurred right after the ordinations and would have gone on for a long time if it wasn't for a long schedule ahead. We can learn a lot from our Sudanese brothers and sisters and their contagious joy in the Lord!
