Anthocyanins (an-tho-SY-uh-nins) are the pigments in tree leaves that are responsible for the reds, purples, and maroon leaf color we see in the fall. These pigments develop in the fall due to glucose (sugar) compounds. As daylight and temperatures decrease the sugar concentration in the leaf increases. Maples, sumac and burning bushes are examples of trees and shrubs that show anthocyanin pigments. Not all trees have the genes required for anthocyanin production, when that is the case, trees will have yellow and brown leaves.
