Out of my 43 years - actually a decade and change less, as we need to account for when one’s emotional connection and appreciation for music hits our fledgling souls - but anyway - I’ve worshipped some bands, as in their own beautiful uniqueness, they were the bands and rockstars that just “got me”. Most are now fleeting fragments that serve as proverbial keys to long forgotten times, places and people that feel more fantasy than real. Then we have Maynard James Keenan. Tool made me uncomfortable early on - I loved anything hardcore, but they were twisted, and I associated them with some nasty stuff - one memory I’ll never forget. As my awareness settled in, and life leveled - only then did I go down the enigma, and ai can say with all clarity, that Maynard is hands down the rock and roll hall of famer of my generation. The complexity of the lyrics, all of his projects and his approach to music - he gets me. He states there is always something there, a wisp of something that only people like him get - it’s almost like an indescribable transmission or emotion that could be set by something as simple as a garbage truck going down the road. And like every creative type, he dances with it for days - putting pen to paper like a painter throwing his paint at the canvas in blotches. But his joy of collaboration - that’s what made me love this guy. Something indescribable cannot be simply one dimensional - no no no - it’s iteration and multifaceted with geometry only he can understand. I get that, hence why I’m saying it.

Maynard is 58 now, has a winery, restaraunt, barber shop, and a bajillion other things and practices ju jitsu. And music still navigates his creative core - but he’s not some dehydrated, skeleton goth core 60 year old horror show - he’s just an incredibly smart dude. F**k around with someone’s “indescribable” and people got hurt back in the day - the rawness of my unsafe era - and I wouldn’t change that for anything.
