Some helpful advice for Smooth Jazz musicians, according to Gorov Music:

1. Own your music, and control it. We don’t see any other universe where creators shouldn’t own 100% of the music they create.

2. Build a catalog of your music over time, register it properly and market it well. In 25 years, it might be worth a lot of $$.

3. Diversify your marketing. There are several important pieces of the music marketing puzzle. We often compare radio airplay and charting to the border of the puzzle, as the remaining pieces fall into place once the border is established. This is especially important for Smooth Jazz artists. Social media, PR/publicity, tour support, lifestyle marketing, playlist promotion and more all represent the remaining pieces of the puzzle.

4. Vet your marketing team. Unfortunately, there are vultures everywhere in our otherwise fabulous business of music. Look for proven, verifiable results over time.

5. Don’t lose sight of the fact that you are not only a musician; you’re also an entertainer, performer, comedian, vocalist, instrumentalist, songwriter, producer, mixing engineer, social media director, record label owner, radio show host, and more. This is a tough business to navigate! It’s important to surround yourself with strong management, or other experienced individuals, who can help oversee all aspects of your career as a Smooth Jazz musician. It’s very important to be honest with yourself, find your strengths and then delegate the things you’re not great at.
