A Russian chess champion is facing permanent suspension after she allegedly poisoned her rival's chess pieces with mercury in an attempt to throw her off her game. Security footage from a Russian chess tournament in early August shows Amina Abakarova smearing an unknown substance onto a chess board scheduled to be used by her longtime rival, Umaiganat Osmanova. Osmanova fell ill shortly after using the set, complaining of nausea and dizziness — and an investigation soon determined that her board had been laced with deadly mercury compounds. Chillingly, Abakarova has allegedly confessed she had hoped to "knock her opponent out of the tournament."
