IV. OUR ATTITUDE TOWARD THE BRETHREN
God is not solely concerned with His relationship to His children, but also with their relationships toward one another. As the children of God and members of His body, we are to center our relationships upon the things of the Spirit. In II Corinthians 5:16 Paul declares, “we know no man after the flesh”. God has called us to fellowship with one another in spirit.

The carnal and spiritual natures are affected by different attitudes, and so we must learn what God expects our attitudes to be.

59. I Corinthians 12:12-27 explains that as Christians we are literally part of Christ’s body. After reading these verses, check the box. [ ]

Just as our physical body needs every part in order to function properly, so does the body of Christ.
God wants His body of believers to move in the Spirit.
The Bible records an instance when believers were not walking in the Spirit. Read Mark 9:33-35.

God wants us to love one another in the Spirit. Without the Lord in control of our lives, we will
always center our lives around self. God wants to change this so that our lives are centered around Jesus first, others second, and then ourselves. This is hard for all of us; but in order to fit into God’s body and work effectively, we need to see the needs of others before our own.

66. In Galatians 5:13 Paul urges us not to use our liberty in Christ for our flesh. What does Paul say
we should do instead?

In Ephesians 4:1-3 God exhorts us to “walk worthy” of the vocation to which we are called. List two of the ways given whereby we can do this.

Very often we feel superior to other people. This is sin because in God’s eyes all men are created
the same. In James 2:1-9 we see an attitude of superiority manifested in the church. Read these scriptures; then answer the next six questions.

God desires to use His body to manifest His power to the world. If we are not submissive to the
Spirit, we hinder God.
Being in one accord is something for which we all should strive. To be in one accord is to be in unity.
Psalm 133 reveals God’s feelings about the unity of the brethren.

Perhaps you are wondering, “How do we obtain this unity, and then keep it?”

We need to strive to keep unity with our brethren.

brethren? v. 16

Arguing among the brethren and wrong feelings toward one another destroy growth in our own lives and in the life of our church body. We must come against Satan’s works of destruction and strive for unity.

If we are always preferring one another, we will begin to walk in unity.

III. OUR ATTITUDE TOWARD THE HOUSE OF GOD
God has always designated a place of worship. In the book of Exodus we learn about the Taber- nacle. Read Exodus 26:1-27. God gave Moses specific instructions concerning the Tabernacle because it was to be the place of worship for all Israel.
The Lord not only gave plans for the construction of the Tabernacle, but He also gave Moses instructions concerning the worship that was to take place within the Tabernacle. In all, the Lord uses 15 chapters in Exodus to instruct His people concerning worship. The word of God makes it obvious that worship and the place of worship are very important.

When Israel came into the Promised Land, God appointed a location for the Tabernacle and all Israel was to come and worship and perform their vows there.

41. What was the name of the city where the Tabernacle was placed? Joshua 19:51

42. Who assembled there to worship God? Joshua 18:1

Later, for convenience, the Israelites began building altars near their homes, visiting the Tabernacle
only once a year. God was not pleased with this.
Joshua 22:9-29 gives the account of an altar that was built outside of Shiloh. Even though the intentions of the two and one half tribes of Gad, Reuben, and Manasseh were good, the rest of Israel was outraged. In their reaction, we can see the mind of God clearly revealed to all who depart from His chosen place of worship. Read this account carefully.

43. What was Israel’s reaction to the two and one half tribes according to Joshua 22:16,18?


Believers can worship God in spirit and truth, wherever and whenever they call upon His name. However, without a commitment to a definite place and time for worship, our human nature leads us astray and deceives us into thinking church attendance isn’t necessary. Basically, this is what happened in Israel. The people built altars wherever they chose and reasoned it was not necessary to go to Jerusalem, and they were soon in a backslidden state.
Read Matthew 21:12-14 and Mark 11:15-19; then answer the next four questions.

47. After the moneychangers were thrown out of the temple, what did Jesus begin to do? (Note Matt.

This shows us that when respect for the temple was reestablished, the Lord was free to move in power. The same principle operates in the New Testament church. As the apostles were faithful in re- specting and attending the temple, God blessed their ministry and manifested His power by increasing the church.

48. Read Acts 2:46,47; then write these scriptures in your own words.

Just as God gave order for worship in the Tabernacle, He also gave order for worship in the church. He has given gifts to men (Ephesians 4:8, 11,12) for the edifying (building up) of His body the church. These are apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. The word of God also mentions other leaders such as deacons and elders in I Timothy chapter 3.
49. Read the account of how God set deacons in the church. Acts 6:1-8. Check the box when you have completed this reading. [ ]

The following scriptures pertain to respect and order in God’s house. In I Corinthians 14, Paul speaks about keeping order during the service. He does not stress doctrine, but rather that things be done in order. Verse 40 summarizes Paul’s instruction.

51. In I Timothy 3, Paul gives instruction concerning elders (overseerers), deacons and their wives. God has set high standards for the leaders of His church. In verse 15 Paul tells us why he has given us these instructions. What is it?

God has given us many examples throughout His word which clearly show that respect and order go
hand in hand. The house of God is a great importance to God. So much so that He commanded His people to center and structure their lives around it. This does not mean we should move next door to the church; rather, the house of God should be prominent in our lives.
God demands our faithfulness to His house; His dealings with Israel make this clear.

52. Read Hebrews 10:25. As the coming of the Lord draws nearer, what are we instructed not to forsake?

53. In Psalm 84:10, what does David say he would rather do than dwell in the tents of the wicked?

54. In Psalm 122:1, why was David glad?

55. Psalm134 commands the servants of the Lord to worship Him in His sanctuary. Write out verses 1
and 2 in your own words.

57. II Chronicles 36:22,23 records God’s command to Cyrus to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem. In his proclamation, Cyrus challenged the Jews. What did he say about those who were willing to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the house of the Lord? v. 23

Studying God’s word gives the Lord opportunity to speak to our hearts. If God has spoken to your
heart concerning your attitude or your faithfulness to His house, ask Him to renew your commitment and love for His house.

As Christians we are called to be Christ like, living differently than the unbeliever. God has spoken in His word that we are to be holy. In order to bring His high standard of holiness into our lives, God has to change us—not only our actions, but also our attitudes. Our natural (carnal) attitudes differ from God’s, and so we need continued exposure to the word of God by which we learn what God’s attitudes are and begin to develop them in our lives. We are not asked to do this in our own strength. God has given us the Holy Spirit by whom He works in us as we submit ourselves. Read Philippians 2:13.

I. OBEDIENCE - THE KEY TO CHRISTIAN LIVING
“Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect”. Matthew 5:48. God means what He says! He has called us to the narrow path of total obedience. We are deceived if we think we can live as the unbeliever and still be pleasing to God. The Bible tells of a great multitude who will expect to enter heaven and suddenly be awakened to the fact that their “Christianity” was not at all accept- able.

Read Matthew 7:21-23; then answer the next three questions.
1. In these verses Jesus says that only certain people will enter the kingdom of heaven. Who are they?

2. What will the Lord say to those who failed to do His Father’s will?

3. Those who will be turned away will have done many works in the name of God. What makes those
who enter different? v. 21

Obedience is the only way to fulfill the will of God. Every step in our Christian life will be a
struggle until we learn to obey God without question.

4. Look up the word ”obedience” in a dictionary and write out the definition .

King Saul disobeyed God’s command. Read I Samuel 15:22,23; then answer the next three ques- tions.

5. What is better than sacrifice to God?

6. In verse 23 God reveals His attitude toward disobedience. To what does God compare it?

7. What happened to Saul because he disobeyed God?

8. In Romans 12:1, 2 God asks us to present our bodies as living sacrifices. If we do this, what will
we prove?

1-48 Jesus speaking to His disciples describes the wise servant. Scripture makes it
obvious that obedience is vital in our relationship with God. From Jesus’ teaching in these verses we learn that God holds us accountable to do what He has asked of us. Using this parable, answer the next two questions.

21. What happened to the servant who knew his master’s will and failed to do it?

Some things about God’s will for our lives cannot be discovered except by experience as we live for
Him. However, there are many things that Scripture clearly reveals to be the will of God for every believer. To do the will of God, we must obey God as He reveals truths from His word. Bear in mind, these areas are not considered optional for us. The Lord has established specific standards and com- mandments that never change. Our part is to obey the Lord and “prove what is that good and acceptable will of God”.
