Few businesses have been part of the Big Island community as long as Suisan Fish Market. For generations, it's been a trusted stop for fresh seafood and one of the most recognizable local institutions in Hilo.
Supporting long-standing local businesses helps preserve the character that makes our island unique.

June's market numbers paint an interesting picture of what's happening across Hawaiʻi.
Residential homes remained active with 182 sales and a median sales price of $470,000, showing that buyers are still making moves despite ongoing affordability challenges.
The condominium market recorded a median sales price of $479,000, highlighting continued demand for lower-maintenance living and investment opportunities.
One of the more notable trends is vacant land activity. With 130 land sales recorded in June, buyers continue to see value in securing property now and building for the future.
While headlines often focus on whether the market is "hot" or "cold," the reality is that different segments of the market are moving in different ways. Understanding those trends can help buyers and sellers make more informed decisions.
Which market segment surprises you most: homes, condos, or vacant land?

If you're looking for a classic Big Island experience, Akaka Falls State Park is well worth the visit. A short walk through a lush tropical rainforest leads to one of Hawaii's most famous waterfalls, plunging over 400 feet into the gorge below.
It's the kind of place that reminds you how diverse the island really is—from black sand beaches and lava fields to dense rainforests and dramatic waterfalls.
What's your favorite scenic spot on the Big Island?

One of the most unique beaches on the Big Island, Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach is a place that never fails to impress. The striking black sand, created by volcanic activity, offers a completely different experience from the white sand beaches Hawaii is often known for.
If you're lucky, you may also spot Hawaiian green sea turtles resting along the shoreline—a reminder of just how special this island's natural environment is.
Have you visited Punaluʻu before?

For many mainland buyers, lava zones are one of the first things they hear about when exploring real estate on the Big Island.
While lava zone designations are important, they don't automatically determine whether a property is a good fit. Instead, they can influence factors like insurance availability, lender requirements, and how buyers evaluate their long-term plans.
The key is understanding how these considerations align with your goals, budget, and comfort level before making a decision.
If you're thinking about buying on the Big Island, having local guidance can make navigating these conversations much easier.

When buyers start comparing homes, certain features tend to stand out immediately. While every buyer has different priorities, homes that feel well-maintained, functional, and competitively priced often attract the strongest interest.
The good news is that preparing your home for the market doesn't always require major renovations. Sometimes focusing on the features buyers value most can make a meaningful difference.
Thinking about selling this year? I'd be happy to share what buyers are responding to in your specific area.
