Paliku Surf

ʻĀkoʻakoʻa

In the great creation chant of Hawaiʻi, the Kumulipo, the ʻākoʻakoʻa (coral) is mentioned in line fifteen.  It is one of the first born of all things and that gives it a high rank.  Without coral there would be no reef.  If no reef there would be no surf!

We offer this design to bring attention to the condition our oceans.  If each of us can do a small part to save the reef, future generations will have a healthier ocean providing food and recreation!

Auwili (Wind Breaker Jacket)

Copyrighted back in 1948, the term “windbreaker” was coined by John Rissman & Son of Chicago.  Their garments were made with gabardine and wool.  They were popular through the mid-century.  The trademark has since expired.

We grew up wearing nylon windbreakers that were two layered.  The outside was opaque but transparent, allowing the tropical print to be visible.  We introduce our “Auwili Windbreaker” with fond memories of our youthful predecessors…
   
One of the swimming areas close to our home is “Auwili.”  My mom told me that it was there that Kūkū threw her in and that was how she learned to swim.  When I was younger, there was a store called Auwili right on Front Street.

It’s wise to carry a light jacket knowing that temperatures can drop at any time.  We created this single layer hoodie with a front zipper for the chilling moments or when there’s a bit more wind than expected.  Roll and pack it for the day or on that long trip for who knows what will happen.   Holiday 2022 Auwili Windbreaker Jackets are made of 100% Ripstop Cotton!
