Hawaii Forestry Extension

Great to see a Hawaiian tree in Waikiki, even though it is a canoe plant and botanically not native. Hope everyone enjoyed the Hawai’i Conservation Conference.

These ōhi’a trees were killed about ten years ago by Rapid ‘Ōhi‘a Death. The first visible symptom of the disease is when the entire crown of the tree turns brown. The leaves then turn gray for several months and gradually fall off the tree. The fine branches decay and fall off the tree after a couple of years. After a decade even the larger branches have fallen off, leaving these dead trunks that look like telephone poles.
