✈️ New Signage Welcomes Visitors to Lea County Regional Airport! ✈️
A new look has arrived at Lea County Regional Airport! The recently completed airport entry, terminal area, and wayfinding signage marks another major milestone in the airport's ongoing modernization and reflects Lea County's continued investment in improving one of our community's most important transportation assets.
This project was made possible through Lea County Resolution No. 25-SEP-238R, approved by the Lea County Board of County Commissioners on September 25, 2025, authorizing a grant agreement with the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) Aviation Division to fund new airport entry, terminal area, and wayfinding signage.
The large illuminated entrance sign along the Carlsbad Highway was installed last Friday and is expected to be connected to power soon. Additional wayfinding signs along Terminal Drive were completed around the same time, while the new monument sign in the airport traffic circle was installed several days earlier. Once power is connected, all major signs will be illuminated to welcome travelers during nighttime operations.
These new signs symbolize the incredible transformation Lea County Regional Airport has undergone over the past several years. Replacing the aging welcome sign with a modern design creates a stronger first impression for visitors while reflecting the airport's continued growth and commitment to serving our community.
The project was fully funded through an NMDOT Aviation Division Grant, highlighting the strong partnership between Lea County and the State of New Mexico. Preliminary concepts were developed by the County Manager during his tenure as Airport Manager, along with PLANT Landscape Architects. The final designs were manufactured and installed by Federal Heath and Mountain West Golf Scapes, with valuable assistance from County Airport staff.
The new entrance sign stands approximately 32 feet, 3 inches tall, while the monument sign in the airport traffic circle reaches approximately 16 feet. The designs intentionally reflect Lea County's industrial heritage and the architecture of the airport terminal. Features such as brushed aluminum, steel columns, rounded white tubing, and curved steel "I" beams mirror elements found throughout the terminal and air traffic control tower. The traffic circle monument incorporates abstract aviation wings and a Zia-inspired design, creating a unique gateway to the airport.
This signage project is part of a broader airport beautification effort. Landscaping around the entrance monument is planned once nearby construction is complete, and additional illuminated wayfinding signs will continue to improve navigation throughout the airport campus.
Lea County Regional Airport also has several exciting projects on the horizon, including the underground relocation of electric, phone, and internet utilities, expected to be completed later this month. Later this summer, Runway 13/31 will undergo a major lighting upgrade, replacing incandescent fixtures with energy-efficient LED lighting. Additional taxiway and drainage improvements are also planned for the future.
A special thank you to the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) Aviation Division, Federal Heath, Mountain West Golf Scapes, PLANT Landscape Architects, County Manager Corey Needham, Reese Stanford, and the dedicated Lea County Regional Airport staff whose hard work, expertise, and collaboration helped bring this project to life. Their commitment and teamwork made these improvements possible and continue to enhance the experience for everyone who visits Lea County Regional Airport.
These improvements represent more than new signs—they are another step forward in building a modern, welcoming gateway for residents, visitors, businesses, and travelers arriving in Lea County. ✈️
