Did you know Sugarcane is one of the “hungriest” plants you can grow? This is how we feed it! 🎋

We grow our sugar cane without synthetic fertilizers by focusing on building healthy soil instead

Sugar cane is a heavy feeding grass, so we keep a thick layer of mulch around the base to feed the soil and hold moisture

Every few months, we also apply homemade compost teas loaded with beneficial microbes

Around our sugar cane rows, we like growing support plants such as jack beans, pigeon peas, and vetiver grass

These plants help improve the system while adding even more organic matter back into the soil

As the canes get taller, we strip away the dry brown leaves from the stalks

This helps more sunlight reach the cane, increases airflow, and removes hiding spots for pests

We also stay on top of weeds so they don’t compete with the sugar cane for nutrients and water

Some of the sweetest sugar cane we’ve ever harvested came from focusing on soil health first and letting the plants do the rest
