Our San Diego team recently took part in a cupping to assist in its efforts to advance strategic coffee varietal proliferation. As one of many cupping panels submitting scores and notes, the San Diego team contributed to a body of data being collected by WCR as part of the International Multilocation Variety Trial.

This project, which began in 2016, consists of gathering the best-performing coffee varieties from around the world and examining how these varietals perform in different environments. The goal is to identify combinations of variety and location that produce the highest cup quality, combined with high resiliency to climate change, in order to help meet industry needs both now and in the future.

The feedback provided by team San Diego and many others will help coffee-producing countries understand the performance of varieties that are new to them, and perhaps influence the countries' decision to pursue commercial release of new varieties to farmers.
