People often ask why there is such a shortage of houses to choose from. Well, here's something interesting. This chart here can explain one of the factors contributing to the situation. Historically, the average amount of single family homes built across the U.S. has been around 1 million per year. After the financial downturn in 2007-2008, new home construction fell for almost a decade. There were over 4 million homes that should have been built from 2008-2020 that simply were not. This is one of the main factors as to why we are in a semi-permanent low inventory environment.
