GMSR Race Diary from Laszlo in the P/1/2 field:
Stage 1 ITT: This year we went back to the original TT course with the initial 5-ish minute climb out of Warren followed by a nice flat section and finishing on a steep kicker. I’m not much of a time trialer so I went out around V02 power to get over the climb and then held whatever I had left to the finish. Ended up 50th out of 109 1:07 down from the winner.
Stage 2 Circuit Race: Probably the most enjoyable/least stressful day of the weekend. We did 3 laps of the 37 mile course that had one rolling climb with a KOM sprint at the top. Goal was to save energy and take in the scenery. A break of 6 went up the road on lap 2 without the GC leader nor any of the comp edge guys which meant we started pacing pretty hard for the remainder of the race. The break stuck and finished 50 seconds ahead of us with Adem from Jamison taking the win and going into yellow.
Stage 3 Road Race: The Queen Stage. The course was the same two gap course across all fields but just like last year, the men’s elite field did an extra loop at the beginning to go back up to the start on the sugarbush access road which is a gnarly 8 minute climb that tends to shred the field. I entered the climb towards the front of the group and was able to keep a consistent effort to get over the top without going into the red. We ripped the descent and the following 10 miles which gave no chance to any chasing groups to catch back on. Going into Middlebury I felt pretty good and was able to again hang on with the front setting a new 8 minute power PR. The group rolled pretty hard over baby gap and going into app gap we were probably down to around 40-50 riders. I tried to follow the front going into app gap but quickly dropped and paced with a smaller group including Ted King and the KOM jersey holder and was able to maintain surprising power coming across the line 23rd 1:42 down from the winner.
Stage 4 Crit: Alternate course on a car racing track meant very fast smooth racing. Legs were pretty smoked so I tailgunned and enjoyed the last day to an incredible weekend of racing. Ended up 23rd on GC.
Overall an incredible weekend of racing🤩💚
