Tierra Tile

My clients brought me a whole bunch of scraps from all the tile work that they had done in their home and asked if I could make them a compass rose. It was pre-mounted in my shop and shipped out for their tile contractor to install.

I just finished up this compass rose of a Boing 314 Clipper, also known as a flying boat. It was made in 1938 and used commercially by PAN AM up until WW2. There was a lot of hope that commercial air traffic would be from flying boats because they could land just about anywhere due to the lack of air strips. But after the war there were lots of unused airstrips that were then put into use as "airports". The age of the modern jet soon followed and the flying boats were then discontinued. My clients are pilots and their father flew a 314 for PAN AM back in the day.

I made this sign for my local tile supply shop. The sky is a glass tile that changes colors as you look at it from different angles.

It was an honor and a privilege to create this Aurora Borealis mosaic for the Serenity Aquatic Physical Therapy building here in Homer Alaska. Thank you for believing in my art and allowing me your step out of the box! It was fully constructed utilizing Laticrete products. Built out of 2” Hydroban board to create a dead air space to illuminate fiber optic lighting. It was constructed in four separate panels using porcelain, glass, marble, and granite tile with three different colors of grout.
