🗑️How to Bulk Delete Emails in Gmail by Category
If your inbox is feeling a bit too , especially in categories like Updates, Social, or Promotions, here’s a quick and easy way to bulk delete old emails by category without wiping out everything. This process helps you clean up your inbox and keep only the most relevant emails.
Step-by-Step Guide:
1. Open Gmail: Go to your Gmail account and open the inbox.
2. Select the Category to Clean Up: Navigate to the Social, Updates, or Promotions tab, or any category you need to clean up.
3. Use the Search Bar: In the search bar at the top, type the following:
👨🏿💻category:social before:2024/12/31
• Replace “social” with updates or promotions depending on which tab you’re cleaning up. This search will show emails before December 31, 2024, in that category.
4. Refine Your Search:
• Hit Enter, and Gmail will show emails that fit the search criteria (emails before a specific date in a particular category).
5. Select All Emails:
• At the top of the email list, click the checkbox to select all visible emails on the current page (up to 100).
• Once you do that, a message will appear saying “Select all conversations that match this search”. Click this option to select all emails in that category before your chosen date.
6. Delete the Emails:
• After selecting all the emails, click the trash can icon to delete them.
• Gmail will prompt you with a warning: “This action will affect all conversations in the search. Are you sure you want to continue?”. Confirm by clicking OK.
7. Wait for the Deletion:
• Gmail will begin deleting the emails. Depending on how many emails there are, this process may take some time, especially for large batches.
8. Double Check:
• Go to the respective tab (e.g., Social, Updates, or Promotions) and verify that the emails have been removed. You can always repeat the process for other categories if needed.
⸻
Pro Tip: This method allows you to clean up your Gmail inbox without deleting important current emails. Just specify a date cutoff to delete everything before that date and keep your inbox organized!
Happy inbox cleaning! ✨
