As today is a significant day across America we are proud of our local Citrus County Sheriff's Office for truly backing what our flag stands for.

Today we honor the American Flag and its rich history! 🌟

🧐 Do you know the story behind the American Flag?

When the American Revolution kicked off in 1775, the colonists were not united under just one banner. In hopes of creating a more united front, the Second Continental Congress created the Continental Colors—essentially the first American Flag.

But for some, it was too similar to the British Flag, and it did not inspire the symbolism of freedom our founding fathers had hoped it would.

On June 14, 1777, a resolution was adopted by the Continental Congress for a new design. “That the flag of the United States shall be of thirteen stripes of alternate red and white, with a union of thirteen stars of white in a blue field, representing the new constellation.”

Although it was not carried into battle until September of that year, President Woodrow Wilson in 1916 and President Calvin Coolidge in 1927 issued proclamations asking for June 14 to be observed as National Flag Day.

It wasn’t officially recognized until August 3, 1949, when Congress approved the observance and President Harry Truman signed it into law! 🖊️

As we display our flags proudly, we honor those who sacrificed for our freedom. Together, we can face challenges, respect diversity, and create a better future.

Let’s show our flags with pride and remember that we are stronger when we stand united.
