The Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu is pleased to co-present with House of Gongs, "Markings of Legacy: Script, Skin, and Spirit" this August 4th, 5:00 p.m. at 2433 Pali Highway.

The cultural showcase brings together Filipino ancestral practices of batok (hand-tap tattooing) and baybayin (pre colonial script) in conversation with living cultural bearers and tradition keepers from the Philippines and the Filipino-American diaspora.

The event features a live batok demonstration, a cultural exchange through baybayin, and a special performance by the Braddah Ash, House of Gongs and University of Hawai‘i Kulintang Ensemble.

A panel discussion moderated by Lydia Querian will offer a dialogue around the cultural, spiritual, and diasporic significance of these practices—featuring Lane Wilcken, mambabatok and scholar of sacred symbolism; Kristian Kabuay, leading advocate and artist of baybayin and batok artist; and House of Gongs Artist in Residence Pow Taton, an esteemed educator, researcher from the Panay Bukidnon community in the Visayas.

Si Marne Kilates (1952-2024) ay tanyag na manunulat at tagasalin sa wikang Bikolano. Siya rin ay nagtamo ng parangal sa Gawad Palanca. Kilalanin siya sa pamamagitan ng kanyang mga tula na pinamagatang “Kun Minsan an Paggiromdom Daing Pandok” at “Pampang Kan Sakong Pagkamoot”.

Bilang background ng mga tula, itinatampok rin ang iba’t ibang nakabibighaning lugar sa Pilipinas. Nakikilala mo ba ang perpektong hugis ng bulkan sa larawan? Ito ang sikat na Bulkang Mayon na matatagpuan sa Albay, Bicol!

This highlights the important role of local narratives in developing national history. When we put ourselves in the local context - where we live, study or work, we will gain a better understanding of our past and the lessons it seeks to teach us.
