You may have heard that dry weather is good for your joints. There is some factual basis for this. Humidity seems to worsen pain in many people with arthritis and other chronic pain conditions. Hot, humid climates can cause increased discomfort, especially if the forecast calls for storms. When a storm moves in, barometric pressure — air pressure in the atmosphere around us– changes. Changes in barometric pressure are associated with more headaches and increased muscle and joint pain.

During the hot summer, we recommend low-impact physical exercises with gentle movements for our patients with chronic pain. Exercises such as water aerobics, swimming, and walking in the pool are low-impact enough not to exert too much strain on the muscles and joints. They are also excellent physical exercise options as they provide resistance without stressing the body.
