Many people assume they're unhappy because of their relationship, their job, or their circumstances. Sometimes the deeper issue is that they've become disconnected from their own emotional experience.
When we push away grief, anger, fear, disappointment, or loneliness, those feelings don't disappear. They often show up as irritability, resentment, perfectionism, numbness, or the sense that something is missing.
Healing isn't about becoming less emotional. It's about becoming honest enough with yourself that your nervous system no longer has to work so hard to avoid what you're feeling. Because the more disconnected you become from your pain, the more disconnected you become from joy, intimacy, gratitude, and love too.
This season of life can feel so full. Graduation celebrations, end-of-school events, summer schedules, vacations, camps, sports, and trying to hold everything together in between. And while it can be exciting, it can also quietly become overwhelming.
This is your reminder to take inventory of how you are caring for yourself in the middle of caring for everyone else. Are your own needs making the list too? Are you allowing yourself rest without guilt? Are your boundaries protecting your peace or are you running on empty trying to keep up?
You do not have to earn rest by burning yourself out first. Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do for your family is to model what it looks like to care for yourself too.
