As we enjoy our summer and we participate in hikes, sports, and other summer activities, there is an increased potential for bug bites — some of which can cause a serious reaction.

Common Summer Bug Bites & Stings to Look Out For
Some of the most typical bug bites and stings common in the summertime here in Texas include bees, wasps, mosquitoes, spiders, ticks. and fire ants.

When are Bug Bites Dangerous?
When a bug stings or bites you, its venom enters your body, causing your immune system to respond. Typically, the least-serious symptoms of a bite include swelling, redness, and itchy skin around the affected area.

However while mosquitos may just seem annoying, they can also transmit diseases to people and pose a risk to our health. Spiders, ticks, and other bug bites can also transmit diseases and can even cause an allergic reaction for some people. Certain species of spiders (including black widows or brown recluses) can also be extremely poisonous to humans.

Even if your symptoms seem minor, you should always seek emergency medical treatment for these types of bites. Here’s how to deal with the symptoms of your bite:

Redness or Swelling
If you notice a rash or have pain in your muscles near the affected area, or you experience flu-like symptoms days after you’ve been bitten, you should see your doctor immediately.

We know it’s tough to resist the urge to scratch, but it’s best to leave it alone. When you scratch a bug bite, you make the area more inflamed and therefore itchier. If your bites are bothering you, consider placing a piece of ice or a drop of honey on them.

Length of Irritation
It’s perfectly natural for bug bites to itch, but they shouldn’t last for weeks. Likewise, if your bite becomes bright red, bubbles starts looking like a rash, or causes tingling inside of your mouth, it’s time to see a doctor.

You may be experiencing an allergic reaction or maybe experiencing other symptoms. If your allergy is severe, you may even have trouble swallowing, feel faint, or become hoarse.

Emergency Symptoms
While a rash may take some time to form, other severe reactions tend to show up in a matter of minutes after you’ve sustained a bite or sting. These symptoms are swelling of the lips, tongue, and throat, difficulty breathing, nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting, blisters, dizziness, loss of consciousness, muscle spasms, or increased/ irregular heartbeat.

If you experience any of these symptoms following a bug bite, you should call 911 or visit a doctor as soon as possible for treatment.

Anxiety in Teens:
According to the National Institutes of Health, nearly 1 in 3 of all adolescents ages 13 to 18 will experience an anxiety disorder. These figures have been continuously increasing; between 2007 and 2012, the prevalence of anxiety disorders among kids and teens increased by 20%.
These figures, along with the fact that the number of hospital admissions for suicidal youths has doubled over the last ten years, raise a lot of troubling issues.
Depression, substance abuse, and even su***de are major mental health issues that can be caused by chronic anxiety. It might make it difficult to concentrate and study, which can lead to issues in school that may last a lifetime. Physical issues like headaches, persistent pain, digestive issues, and later heart disease can also result from it.
What then can be done by parents, educators, and anybody else who works with kids and teens?
Recognize the symptoms of anxiety. Children occasionally express their anxiety verbally, but other times it is less obvious—especially since they might not even be aware of it themselves. Some examples of symptoms are:
Recurrent concerns and fears over everyday routines
alterations in behavior, including irritability
avoiding social interactions, activities, or school
declining grades or skipping classes
difficulty sleeping or focusing
alcoholism, drug use, or other dangerous behaviors
bodily symptoms that recur frequently, such as exhaustion, headaches, or stomachaches.
Discuss potential sources of stress with the kids. Try to view the world from their perspective and assist them in maintaining perspective and coping mechanisms.
Be careful with the standards you set for kids and teenagers. Children can achieve their potential with the aid of high expectations, but these expectations must be reasonable. Additionally, keep in mind that kids require downtime to unwind, play, and spend time with friends—all of which are essential for both their mental and physical wellbeing. And it's crucial that we keep in mind that life is about more than just success.
Children's use of social media should be discussed. Encourage them to take breaks and to reflect critically and logically on how social media affects their life.
If you are noticing signs of anxiety in your child or are worried that something you are seeing could be related to anxiety, talk with your pediatrician. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, 80% of kids with a diagnosable anxiety disorder are not getting treatment―and anxiety disorders are highly treatable! As with most problems, the earlier it is diagnosed the easier it is to treat.
The most effective treatments with for anxiety disorders are cognitive‐behavioral therapy (CBT) and SSRI medications.
