This installation is less than two years old. The Red Maple went in as a 3 gallon. The biggest maintenance problem is the Crape Myrtle.
An herb garden borders the porch. Rosemary and chives have been the most successful herbs in Houston.
We plan to replace the Texas Sedge with a happier sedge. I haven’t figured out how to make Texas Sedge happy yet. I also need to add Asclepias, because there was a Monarch lurking about today.
Purple Coneflower isn’t native and isn’t apologizing. 💅
But we will be featuring some gorgeous Sanguine Coneflowers soon.

Maintaining the edge with a weedeater is important and easy. Follow these simple rules and you’re golden:
✅ 1) Weedeater in the vertical position
✅ 2) Spray directed outside of the bed
✅ 3) Multiple passes – 2 steps forward, 1 step back
✅ 4) Firm grip for precision
Your lawn can be an intentional space to walk, play, and even host beneficial insects. Maintain it properly so that it complements your native plant beds and does not compete with them.
