Costa Cruises has implemented a new policy that fines passengers for taking food outside designated dining areas. The Carnival Corporation owned cruise line sent a notice to guests stating that all food must be consumed exclusively in designated dining areas, with violations resulting in a fine of about $70.

The policy marks a departure from the common practice of passengers loading up plates with buffet food to take back to their staterooms or other parts of the ship. It's fairly common to see cruisers using this as a free room service hack, though it often results in dirty plates left in hallways.

While 24-hour room service is available on Costa Cruises ships, it is not complimentary unless passengers are in a suite or premium/deluxe cabin. Standard cabins get charged a €5 per person delivery fee for breakfast brought to the cabin, charged per person regardless of how much food is ordered.

So far, Costa Cruises is the only cruise line with this specific rule. The policy has sparked mixed reactions from passengers, with some questioning the logic behind the change and others concerned about how it will be enforced.
