Laredo Texas, is looking at a plan to cut down traffic at the World Trade Bridge for trucks and other business vehicles.
Officials say trucks often make U-turns on the bridge because they can't pay the needed fees to cross from Mexico into the United States. Drivers pay these fees through accounts tied to stickers on their truck windshields. If there's not enough money in the account, the truck has to turn around, which causes hold-ups.
"We need to get creative," said Laredo Mayor Victor Trevino. "We need to think like the biggest port in the United States."
On July 22, the Laredo City Council voted without opposition to make carriers keep at least $100 in their accounts to cross the border checkpoint.
Numbers from the city reveal that about 2.4 million commercial vehicles use Laredo's two international bridges open for business traffic each year.
