The History of the Gimlet
The Gimlet traces back to the 19th century, when British sailors were given lime juice to prevent scurvy. To preserve it on long voyages, the juice was initially mixed with neutral spirits. That changed when ship provisioner Lachlan Rose developed a method to fortify lime juice with sugar instead of alcohol, creating a shelf‑stable product. His invention became the foundation of the modern Gimlet.
