This is one of the first songs I wrote during this COVID era, “Thrive.” It is an empowerment song about independence and destiny. I didn’t have any person in mind when I wrote it but, maybe at an unconscious level, I personified this whole lockdown situation and new normal. I did picture a female voice and hoped to have a female artist sing it one day. When I recorded it I had to drop the track down a few keys before I laid down the “dummy” vocal. I use a “dummy” vocal as a guide when I am producing and adding those final touches to the musical content. The music is set to a house groove and I added some funk elements to make the track stand out. Well, I kept writing and moving on to other songs so the “dummy” vocal had to stay as the main vocal. For the music video I tried something new and asked my daughter, Juliet, to become a part of the project and guide the video. This is set in a virtual world called Roblox. If you have young children you may know about Roblox and its vast universe. The video features a Roblox character who begins in this virtual world as a newcomer into this strange place and ultimately gains confidence and control of her destiny. Where do musical ideas come from? Back in the day I use to record my melodies on micro cassettes. I would be just about to go to bed and a catchy chorus would invade my mind and keep me awake. Or I would be eating dinner and a chord progression would rush me from the table to my keyboard to record the sequence. I have a collection of old micro cassette recordings that were created from such events from my youth. How they just appear is pure magic. It’s like they are floating in the ether looking for a receptive mind to occupy. Stay openly creative my artist friends…

To Bridge or not to Bridge? The bridge section of a song can be a challenge at times. Sometimes an instrumental break works and others seem to require another melodic avenue to explore. It’s the returning back to the home chorus that makes it an interesting endeavor.

I finally got a dedicated digital recorder to put down my ideas. I relied on my phone to put stuff down but there are always file, compression, and conversion issues. This should make it a simple process to access my files. Plus, the boogeyman can’t hear my recordings or ideas anymore 😂
