This Thanksgiving, we’re thanking God for the recent Houston s*x trafficking sting…

“We gathered 200 law enforcement officers. The operation took place at a specific time and it had to be simultaneous, because these bars are all over north Houston. So we had to get 200 heavily armed law enforcement agents and officers all throughout Houston to hit precisely at the same time. And this is where the God thing comes in.
It’s remarkable to me. The precision that had to happen and the danger of the operation… not just danger to our officers and agents, but danger to the girls. Collateral damage. Gunfire shootouts, you know, you have 200 heavily armed individuals going into nine different bars where there’s also heavily armed individuals. All of the bars have a communication network, so if we hit one early, well.
So we met all of the officers and I spoke to everybody. I asked the police chaplain to pray over everyone and for God to be with this mission. And I said, ‘I’m not trying to preach, I’m not trying to evangelize, but I’m a man of faith and I believe we are bringing the cup of God’s wrath down on these people today.’ And I said, ‘One day you guys will be judged for what you’ve done and you’re participating in a historic mission.’ 84 girls were freed that day.
Here’s the other thing about the prayer — there were armed guys on the inside of the bars and they handed their weapons over without any resistance. Not a shot was fired in any of the locations. What are the chances of that? It doesn’t happen.”

“I sat in a PhD program for five years where white people were negatively talked about. So I know that feeling of ‘Well, you can’t just condemn all white people for this.’ But I will say this: my white skin doesn’t make me inherently evil, but my white skin does immediately align me with a history and a group category that has done a bunch of evil in the name of race. So I want to be careful that I don’t dismiss that too easily.
So let’s just explore that. Is there something that I need to repent of? Is there an attitude or something that’s latently still living inside of me that I need the Spirit of God to excise out of me? These are important questions for someone who’s trying to live by the Spirit in a culture that has been hyper-racialized. It’s been hyper-racialized — meaning that I can’t just cling to my own innocence in the midst of that.
Even though the extreme ways in which race is talked about is wrong, we won’t do the important work if we just right away dismiss it. We have to explore it. And I’ll say that most people I’m around won’t explore it. Most Christian people won’t explore it. And that’s a problem.”
As part of our series on critical race theory, host and scholar Ed Usynski examined the church’s blind spots around race and casted a vision for a more culturally competent and compassionate future. Watch the full conversation on YouTube, or listen wherever you get your podcasts!
