Did you know that The ARKGroup has been conducting a faith-based prison ministry for about 20 years for women who are incarcerated for minor felonies in Plane State Jail in Dayton, TX? Here are just a few of the comments that were shared at yesterday’s ARK board of directors meeting. When these women are released, they hope to incorporate the parenting lessons they learned into their children’s lives.

About the ARK (Adults Relating to Kids) Group

Kids Who Feel Loved Do Better!

Since its inception in 1992, the ARK (Adults Relating to Kids) Group has been on a mission to improve relationships and build healthy environments through the understanding and application of unconditional love. ARK is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that offers a variety of relational education programs with its flagship curriculums being ARK for Parents and ARK for Teachers.

ARK programs, which also include curriculums for teens, college students and other groups, are research-based, stemming from a study conducted in partnership with the University of Texas School of Public Health. This ground-breaking study revealed a new paradigm for building the self-concept of a child. Rather than being a product of performance, healthy self-esteem is primarily generated by a child receiving unconditional love from an adult (parent, teacher, counselor, etc.) who is central in the child's life. ARK programs were founded and designed based on this principle.

ARK is endorsed by Dr. Robert Brooks, a psychologist at Harvard Medical and one of the world’s leading experts on child resilience. ARK Programs include:

ARK for Teachers Leads to 49% Drop in Out-of-school Suspensions at Aldine ISD

Through its efforts, ARK has helped school districts implement “empathetic teaching” models designed to build the student/teacher relationship through a process of intentionally extending unconditional love and care to students—disciplining their behavior while still valuing them as persons. (Empathetic teaching is distinctly different from authoritative teaching in that it places a much greater emphasis on the prevention of classroom misbehavior with the understanding that kids behave better and perform better for teachers they believe care about them).

Over the last six years, ARK worked with the Aldine Independent School District – the ninth largest school district in Texas – to implement ARK for Teachers at its middle schools. The program included 14 schools involving 20,852 students during the 2011-12 through 2016-17 school years and was tested for effectiveness by a Sam Houston State University research team as the “Aldine ISD Middle School Dropout Prevention Project.” The results showed ninth-grade out-of-school suspensions dropped by 49% over a four-year period for students who had been exposed to ARK-trained teachers during their entire middle school experience compared to students who had not. The program also had positive effects on student retention rates, state exam performance, student attendance, and in-classroom behavior.
