Black History 365 ——We Love @sallymcmullin 🤎 ‘BLACK STORIES We Should All Know’! Get Into Black History and Be Inspired to Make More✊🏾🖤🎩

👉🏾MILDRED BLOUNT was a GIFTED HAT-MAKER (milliner).

👉🏾She was only 17 when she did all the bridesmaids’ head pieces for Madam C.J. Walker’s granddaughter’s wedding - Fairy Mae (9,000 people invited - featured in New York Times)

👉🏾She applied for a job as a LEARNER with John-Frederics Company - “Royalty of Hat Making” in New York

👉🏾They never had a Black person apply before

👉🏾MILDRED BLOUNT said: “give me a chance.” (paraphrased)

👉🏾She loved history and was passionate about hats - she combined the two loves

❤️as a passion project she created 87 miniature hats focused on the history of hats from 17th-19th century

👉🏾Those hats were featured at the NEW YORK WORLD FAIR

🗣️many sources say Irene Selznick saw those hats at the fair and wanted THAT designer for GONE WITH THE WIND

👉🏾 MILDRED BLOUNT did not get credit because she was Black

👉🏾After working for John-Frederics for 13 years she got a grant and started working on her own in Beverly Hills, California

🎥she became the FIRST BLACK MEMBER OF MOTION PICTURES COSTUME UNION

🎥Mildred Blount designed for many famous people - Joan Crawford, Ginger Rogers, Scarlett O’Hara, Gloria, Vanderbilt, on and on

🗣️”I do this work so that all who see it will know the hidden possibilities of women.” -Mildred Blount (paraphrased)
