Featured Guide: Capt. Sally Black (formerly Moffett)
Baffin Bay scored when Capt. Sally Black relocated her shallow water site casting, wade fishing, fly and lure fishing guide service in 2010 from Rockport. While Capt. Sally does still guide in the Rockport area, she and her husband, Capt. Aubrey Black, focus their efforts in the Baffin Bay area.
A lifelong outdoorsman, Capt. Sally grew up along the shores of Lake Erie. She inherited her love of boating and fishing from her father, sharing summers aboard their Chris Craft cruiser. After outfitting her first boat while working as a paralegal, she realized that her “real job” interfered with her fishing. In 1998 she obtained her 25 Ton near-coastal Masters Coast Guard Captain’s license, and decided to go out on her own as a full-time professional fishing guide in Rockport.
Capt. Sally is an accomplished fisherman, pioneering Kayak fishing in Texas as well as being the only female fly fishing guide there. Her most prized catch was in 2004, a giant 31 ½” trout, caught on the fly while site casting in only 6 inches of water! She remarks that, after fishing for the past 27 years in the saltwater, there are so many memorable fishing-related stores, but the most recent was a big 9lb trout she caught in Baffin Bay in 2011.
Author of several published fishing-related books and magazine articles, Capt. Sally has shared her expertise in radio and television appearances as well. Advice that Capt. Sally would give to new fishermen and women includes:
“To get started, just go fishing as much as possible and read fishing books, magazines and on-line saltwater sites! The rod and reel is very important. Figure out your type or style of fishing, buy a rod and reel to match your style, select a guide, and keep fishing as much as possible.”
Captain Sally also guides clients on dove and duck hunts during the seasons, with her black Lab, Kelly.
