What is a Cataract?

A cataract is not something that grows inside your eye.
A cataract is not something that grows outside your eye.

A cataract is the opacification or clouding of the natural lens in your eye. The natural lens becomes a cataract. It's very much like gray hair: almost everybody will develop them if you live long enough. They are usually slow-growing, but they can also exist at birth or can also be caused by trauma to the eye.

A cataract's development could be so gradual that a person might not notice the change or resulting decrease in vision until it is brought to their attention by their eye doctor. As a cataract progresses, it not only affects one's acuity but also a patient's color vision.

With today's technology, cataract surgery has become minimally invasive and is usually an out-patient procedure. Once the cataract is removed, an intraocular lens, or IOL, is inserted in its place. The entire procedure takes approximately 10-15 minutes.
