Why Do My Lights Dim When My AC Turns On?

That quick flicker when your AC kicks on isn't random, it's your compressor pulling a big burst of power to start up. Once it settles into normal running mode, the power draw drops and your lights bounce back. Occasional, brief dimming is pretty normal, especially in older homes.

But if it's happening every cycle, getting worse, or paired with buzzing or breaker trips, that's usually a sign of something else going on: a weakening capacitor, a compressor that's struggling to start, or wiring that hasn't kept up with your system's demand.

Houston summers make this more noticeable. Your AC is cycling constantly to keep up with the heat, which means more startup surges and more strain on aging parts.

If the flickering is mild and occasional, no need to worry. If it's frequent or getting worse, it's worth having it checked: sometimes the fix is a new capacitor, sometimes it's a hard start kit that gives the compressor an extra boost without pulling so hard on your home's power.

Not sure which one you're dealing with? Hage Energy can diagnose it in one visit and get it handled before it becomes a bigger repair.

If your zoned HVAC system has been clicking on and off unexpectedly, the zone control board could be to blame. This kind of short cycling, where your system starts and stops more often than it should, can hurt comfort, spike energy bills, and wear out equipment faster than normal.

During a recent inspection, we found an outdated Honeywell zone control board causing exactly this issue. The fix: replacing it with a new, updated Honeywell zoning control panel. Existing zone dampers stay in place and get reconnected to work with the new board.

We also recommend upgrading the thermostat when it isn't on the approved compatibility list for the new system. It may still function, but pairing compatible equipment ensures reliable communication and performance you can count on.

What's included:
-Remove old control board
-Install new Honeywell zoning panel
-Reconnect and configure dampers
-Install a compatible thermostat
-Verify wiring and system communication
-Test heating/cooling across all zones

Noticing short cycling in your Houston home? Hage Energy can diagnose and fix it fast.

Why Is My Air Vent Dripping Water?

That drip from your air vent isn't rain, it's your AC telling you something's wrong.

Water dripping from a vent usually means your condensate drain line is clogged. Your AC pulls moisture out of the air, that moisture drips into a drain pan, and exits through a drain line. When that line gets blocked by algae, mold, or debris, water backs up and overflows. In Houston's humidity, it can happen within a single season.

A dirty air filter is the other common cause. It chokes airflow over the evaporator coil, which freezes it. When the system shuts off, the ice melts all at once and floods the pan.

Before you call, check two things: your air filter and your drain pan. If the filter is gray and packed, replace it. If the pan is full of standing water, the drain line is blocked.

Beyond that, it's a job for a technician.

Don't wait for the ceiling stain to show up. Call Hage Energy today, we'll clear your drain line and get your system running clean before the heat peaks. Same-day appointments available.

A homeowner called us after noticing drainage problems with their air conditioning system. During our inspection, we found a severely clogged sink P-trap where the HVAC drain lines terminated. Hair, dust, and debris had built up over time, restricting condensate flow and creating a risk of water backing up into the system.

We also found multiple drain lines tied together, reducing drainage efficiency, and a worn drain pan that could no longer provide reliable overflow protection. Left unaddressed, these issues can lead to water leaks, ceiling damage, and unexpected system shutdowns caused by safety switches.

Repairs Completed
-Removed and replaced the damaged drain pan.
-Installed a new Aqua overflow safety switch for added protection.
-Added a Jones valve to simplify future drain maintenance.
-Isolated the drain lines to improve drainage performance.
-Removed and cleaned the clogged sink P-trap.
-Flushed the drain lines with nitrogen while vacuuming the system to clear blockages and restore proper condensate flow.

After the repairs, the AC drain system was operating properly and the overflow protection devices were functioning as designed.

How to Prevent AC Drain Clogs
-Schedule annual HVAC maintenance and drain cleaning.
-Replace air filters regularly to reduce dust buildup.
-Watch for water near your indoor unit or drain termination.
-Address unexpected system shutdowns quickly, as an overflow switch may be preventing water damage.

If your AC stopped working in a Houston summer, don't panic. The problem might be simpler than you think: it could just be your capacitor.

What Is a Capacitor?

A capacitor is a small component inside your AC unit that delivers the electrical jolt needed to start your compressor and fan motors every time the system kicks on. Without it, your AC can't run.

Signs It's Failing

-Warm air blowing from your vents
-Humming or buzzing from the outdoor unit
-Slow startups or short cycling
-Unit won't turn on at all

Why It Can't Wait

Houston's heat puts extra strain on capacitors, shortening their lifespan. Worse, a failing capacitor forces your compressor to overwork, turning a small repair into a costly one if ignored.

What to Expect

Capacitor replacement is one of the fastest HVAC repairs there is. A technician can diagnose and replace it in under an hour.

Call Us Today

Not sure if your capacitor is the problem? Our technicians will test it in minutes and give you a straight answer: no guesswork, no upsells. Let's get your AC running right.
