Disciples United Methodist Church
To reach the last, least and lost and equip Disciples of Jesus Christ to transform our community.
Day 3: The Cross—Vertical and Horizontal Love
Reading: John 3:16-17; 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
Devotional: The cross beautifully illustrates complete love. The vertical beam represents our relationship with God—His love reaching down to us and our love reaching up to Him. The horizontal beam represents our love extending to others. You cannot have one without the other and claim to follow Christ. Jesus didn't stay in comfortable places with comfortable people. He went to sinners, tax collectors, and the marginalized. He loved boldly without fear of judgment or shame. True love is patient, kind, and keeps no record of wrongs. It bears all things and endures all things. Today, ask yourself: Is my love only vertical, or does it extend horizontally to those around me? Who needs to experience God's bold love through you today?
Day 5: The Great Commission Lives
Reading: Matthew 28:16-20; Acts 1:8
Devotional: Jesus' final words before ascending were not a suggestion but a commission: Go into all nations, teaching and baptizing. This mission is not reserved for professional ministers—it's for every believer. You carry within you the Word that can speak life into someone contemplating death, hope into someone's despair, and light into someone's darkness. Jesus promised, "I am with you always, even to the end of the age." The end has not yet come, which means your mission continues. The Holy Spirit empowers you to be His witness wherever you are. What will you do to share the good news today?
Reflection: Who in your sphere of influence needs to hear about God's love and saving grace?
Application: Commit to sharing your testimony with one person this week. Pray for divine appointments and courage.
Closing Prayer for the Week: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, help me to reimagine how I see You, myself, and others. Open my eyes to recognize Your presence in unexpected places. Give me boldness to love, joy to serve, and courage to lead. Use me as Your witness to a world that desperately needs Your light. In Jesus' name, Amen.
