We are excited to announce that Midwest Friends of Wildlife will be hosting their Venomous Handling Essentials Workshop on July 25 here at the Howell Nature Center! 🐍
This is what they have to say about it- our next Venomous Handling Essentials workshop is coming up soon and open to the public! This two-day workshop is a rare opportunity to learn how to work with live venomous reptiles in a safe and professional manner, covering every technique and topic any zookeeper, biologist, veterinarian, or first responder would need to know. Not one of those groups? That’s okay! Our workshops are open for any interested member of the public who wishes to attend. Come learn something new, network with folks from diverse backgrounds, and safely interact with our native Midwest venomous species. The best part? All proceeds from these workshops directly fund wildlife and habitat restoration projects right here in Michigan.

Shout-out Sunday! 📢
We’d like to give a HUGE thank you to The Ivy Table for donating their leftover produce to us! This amazing nonprofit organization operates a pay-what-you-can and pay-it-forward cafe to ensure no human goes hungry, and with this new partnership, they are also ensuring our wildlife is well-fed too! We are beyond grateful to be receiving food twice a week, especially during our busy season when we have so many mouths to feed! Thank you! 🙏💕

Wow, Wow, Wow!! We have had so many people bring us towels and blankets that we have run out of places to put them!! Please put a pause on bringing them to us and look out for when we can fit more!
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone that has donated so far 💕
‼️ We need towels/ blankets‼️
If you have any old towels or blankets please drop them off at our welcome center! Our welcome center is open 10-5pm everyday!

No, we do not rehabilitate raccoons, but sometimes saying no doesn’t feel like an option. 💔
We recently admitted a litter of orphaned babies after their mother was shot. She was shot through a barn wall, and 2 of her babies were found snuggled up to her body when a hole was cut in the wall several days later to address the smell. The next day, 2 more babies that weren’t initially discovered crawled out of the wall. It appears as though mom made it a few days before passing, which is heartbreaking but also probably the only reason the babies survived. She cared for her babies until the very end and passed with them by her side. 😭
After intense stabilization, all 4 are thankfully doing well. But please let this be a reminder that when you remove a wildlife mother, you are also impacting her young. And some species, like foxes, need both parents for survival. Utilizing humane eviction methods, or even better, learning to co-exist, is the only way to avoid harm.
Although we didn’t announce it here, we made the decision to extend our Spring Appeal through the end of the month. This fundraiser is our largest source of funding for this busy time of year, and we quite simply need more help. If you are in a position to help support our mission, please consider a gift of any amount- no amount is too small, and each contribution is meaningful and greatly appreciated. 🙏
