Automotive Refinishing

Industry Fact: Before modern body filler, technicians shaped bodywork with heated lead-and-tin solder.

The material was worked by hand to smooth welded seams, shape panels and create flowing custom lines. The process took serious skill and became especially popular on chopped and lowered custom Mercury coupes.

This is where the term "Lead Sled" came from.

Lead can still be uncovered during classic-car teardown, and it does not always mean an old repair. Manufacturers also used body solder at some factory seams and joints.

It’s an old-school craft that helped shape some of the most iconic customs ever built.

Old-school lacquer has history. Modern basecoat and clearcoat has performance.

A lot of classic cars originally came with lacquer paint, which gave them that period-correct look but didn’t hold up the way modern finishes do. Lacquer can fade, crack, check, and lose gloss over time—especially after years of sun, heat, and washing.

Modern basecoat/clearcoat systems are built different. Better gloss, better UV protection, better durability, and a deeper finish when the prep is done right.

There’s nothing wrong with respecting the original look of a classic. But if the goal is long-term quality, protection, and a finish that holds its value, modern high end paint systems are hard to beat.

At Illusion Auto, we keep the classic character while using modern materials.

'72 Chevelle:

This is what major rust repair looks like before the paint ever goes on.

The cowl on this ’72 Chevelle had heavy rust and damage hidden under the surface. We brought it back the right way, repaired the problem areas, cleaned everything up, and got it primed for the next step.

Repairs like this aren’t glamorous, but they’ll make the final result last.
