Our mindset literally has the ability to shape our physiology.
I’m speaking as someone who recently experienced this. I was a caretaker for a family member at their end stage in life. Despite eating primarily clean and prioritizing sleep, I gained weight and gained gray hairs. My mindset was negative and my nervous system was dysregulated. All I was doing was worrying and overthinking about a situation I couldn’t change.
We all get hit by tidal waves in life, but they pass. And when they pass is when we do the work.
The work is training our nervous system to adapt and handle the next wave. We can do this through
- short bursts of high intensity exercise
- ice baths
- breath work (Wim Hof)
So, that’s why you’ll see me doing some high intensity workouts and getting in my ice barrel. I’m training my nervous system for life, for the next “tidal wave”.
Full transparency, when I was in the middle of this huge life stress, these activities were less. My nervous system was maxed out and I did the opposite. I walked and did slow gentle movements, I sat in the sun and warm baths, taking in all the heat and Vitamin D I could.
Change your mindset, listen to your body, and when your “tidal wave” passes, do the work. Your body will thank you when the next stress arrives.

I tend to get these comments more from females. So let’s bust those myths!
First off ladies, we simply don’t have the testosterone levels to support this. I know women who strength train several days of the week for years on end and I promise you, they’re not walking around like the She-Hulk.
Second, muscle is more dense than fat, so it takes up less space.
Third, it’s metabolically active, so it burns more calories than fat!
And as for the whole “toning” thing- muscle either grows or shrinks. That’s it. Toning is just a marketing term. It was made up to market towards people who are afraid of getting bulky.
