This Memorial Day we honor all who gave their lives serving their country including Colonel David S. Cowles, who led the 128th Regiment of Columbia and Dutchess counties and was killed during the 28-day siege of Port Hudson, Louisiana. It is said he died saying, “tell my brother that I died with my face to the foe.” Words to that effect are on his tombstone in the Cedar Park Cemetery.
